In 1916 I enjoyed the excitement of playing at a concert with Ysaye and Vladimir de Pachmann, in Mozart's clarinet trio in E flat (the clarinet part on the viola). Just before we went on to the platform Pachmann put his arms round Ysaye and me—or as nearly p.46 round as they would go (both Pachmann and Ysaye were portly figures)—and in dulcet tones, with his beatific smile, said: "We tree. . . !"
