The first is Vladimir de Pachmann, who came from Southern Russia and was trained at the Vienna Academy; unfortunately he already belongs to the well-nigh fabulous and legendary past.	Der erste, der an der Wiener Akademie gebildete Südrusse Wladimir von Pachmann, gehört leider schon der fast sagenhaften und legendenreichen Vergangenheit an.
He was without doubt the Chopin player; he owed a small part of his fame to his entirely artless special talents for oratory and mime in the concert hall, as did also Josef Weiss [1848-1918, a German-Hungarian from Kashau in upper Hungary, a pupil of Liszt (1811-1886)].	Er war zweiffellos d e r Chopinspieler, der ein klein Teil seiner Berühmtheit wie Josef Weiß seinen ganz naiv gemeinten oratorisch-mimischen Sondertalenten im Konzertsaal verdankte.
Pachmann re-composed and re-dreamt Chopin.	Pachmann dichtete und träumte Chopin nach.
He did so with a velvety touch, a poetic fragrance of sensation, a loose and winged lightness of rhythm, an artistry of the small and refined in the treatment of detail, a genuine, childlike pure and sunny naivety of feeling and expression, which existed only with him and once for all time!	Mit einem samtnen Anschlag, einem poetischen Duft der Empfindung, einer lockeren und beschwingten Leichtigkeit des Rhythmus, einer Klein- und Feinkunst in der Behandlung des Details, einer echten, kindlich reinen und sonnigen Nativität in Gefühl und Ausdruck, wie sie nur mit ihm und nur einmal da waren!
Although he was not a great virtuoso in the technical sense, he was great in the small, in the lyrical, in the thoughtful and poetic.	Kein großer Virtuos im technischen Sinn, war er gross im Kleinen, im Lyrischen, im Sinnigen und Poetischen.
And he was also great in that he correctly assessed himself and his capabilities.	Und er war auch darin groß, daß er sich selbst und sein Können stets richtig einschätzte.
It is well-known how Chopin hated the lower-class concert hall, and how it was only in the grand salon in the presence of elegant ladies and understanding friends that he abandoned himself in his playing.	Man weiß, wie Chopin den grellen Konzertsaal haßte, und wie er nur im großen Salon unter edlen Frauen und verstehenden Freunden im Spiel sich selbst hingab.
Pachmann played him in just that way.	So spielte ihn Pachmann.
